Ever since I noticed Tim Rogers' refusal to ever say the word "but," usually replacing it with "though," I've had this feeling that something was off about these "though" for "but" sentences, that "though" is somehow not perfectly synonymous with "but." However, I could never put my finger on what exactly the distinction was between these two adversative conjunctions that sometimes made certain sentences not quite make sense until I mentally back-translated "though" into "but." Rewatching this video, though, I think I finally figured it out. What solved it for me was when Tim says at 5:41, "I scheduled a tweet for 10:31 p.m. on Sunday, December 8th, 2019. I would have scheduled that tweet for 10:08 p.m., though I knew for a fact that my most devoted haters would view that timestamp with suspicion." The "though" in that second sentence clearly doesn't do the work it's supposed to, the work that "but" would have done had Tim permitted himself the luxury of using the latter conjunction. The reason is that "though" is *concessive:* it introduces something that the speaker admits is true even though it might seem to conflict with what's just been said. In this sentence, then, "though" produces the meaning "Despite knowing that my haters would respond negatively to a 10:08 timestamp, I would have scheduled the tweet for 10:08 anyway." However, this is not what Tim means to say: he is actually trying to say that he *didn't* send the tweet at 10:08 *because* he anticipated some reaction from his haters. "But" *would* adequately convey that sense here because, among the other wondrous things "but" can do, it can introduce a decision or event that contrasts with what we've just been told without suggesting that this contrast is of the nature of a concession but rather that the new information cancels the previous suggestion. A pair of example sentences to show what I mean: "I started to go for the door, but the guard noticed me." "I started to go for the door, though the guard noticed me." In the first sentence, I presumably either changed my mind about going for the door or was stopped by the guard: the "but" signals a new event that derails my plan. In the second sentence, I presumably keep on toward the door even though I've been spotted: "though" introduces merely a reason you might not think I would choose that plan, perhaps an implied admission that it wasn't the wisest plan, not an actual reversal.
